His Glory in the Desert
II. The Lord’s Command
Not only do we see the Israelite’s complaint, but we also see the Lord’s command. This command is found in Exodus 16:4, “Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.”
What a great God we serve! I do not know where you are emotionally, spiritually, or financially, but we serve a God who rains blessings down from Heaven. We serve a God who gave a command of provision. God said to the children of Israel, “I am going to give you food called manna everyday. I am going to give you a little extra so you will have some for the Sabbath. I’m going to provide it one day at a time.” Psalm 78:24–25 recounts this event, “And had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. Man did eat angels’ food: he sent them meat to the full.” There is a God in Heaven who this week wants to provide for your needs—I believe that from the bottom of my heart. But if you and I want this to happen, then there is a very simple test we must pass. It is a command of proving.
The Bible tells us how God proved the Israelites in Exodus 16:4, “Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.” The grand object of their being led into the wilderness was, that they might receive religious training directly under the eye of God; and the first lesson taught them was to have a constant dependence on God for their daily nourishment.
The same test God sent the children of Israel, He will send to us. Just as the Israelites were to rely on their daily provision, God wants His children to do the same. I like what Joshua said in Joshua 24:15, “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua made this statement many years after the events of Exodus 16. He had learned to trust God day by day.
